RUGGERI

The Art of Winemaking — A Long and Proud Family History

The Ruggeri winegrowing estate was founded in 1950 by Giustino Bisol, whose family had a deep-rooted, centuries-old tradition of winegrowing in the Valdobbiadene region. The name of the town, "Case Bisoi" ('The Houses of the Bisols'), is marked on even the oldest maps of the area; today it is known as Cartizze, although over time it was also called "Chartice" or "Gardizze." As can be seen on old documents from the public archives, the Bisol family has been making wine here for hundreds of years.

In the 19th century Eliseo Bisol left behind documented traces of his work as a distiller. In 1920, his son Luigi Bisol, an enologist, constructed a wine cellar in Montebelluna. Luigi's sun Giustino Bisol in turn founded the Ruggeri winery in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene in 1950, with the goal of enhancing the base wines of Prosseco Superiore and the Cartizze through a secondary fermentation.

The Valdobbiadene D.O.C.G. (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin) is one of the most interesting winegrowing regions from a quality standpoint. Its vineyards have for years produced some of the most renowned and aromatic Prosecco Superiore wines. Yet there are also many older — in some cases much older — vines that serve as living and growing monuments to the quality of the Valdobbiadene vineyards. The impressive root system of an old Glera vine allows it to thrive in the famously changeable climate of the Valdobbiadene hills. This keeps quality stable year after year. A Glera grape cluster is elongated, with long, thin stems carrying the soft, sun-kissed grapes. It is just as fine and elegant as the wines it produces. Glera is harvested in September, together with small quantities of Verdiso and Perera grapes that are also found on the vineyard. They are only present in small volumes, but their acidity and aromas play an important role in the final blend.
The estate's philosophy is clear: uncompromising care and expertise from vine to bottle. From a tradition of extraordinarily high-quality grapes to each individual step of vinification, the process is conducted with love, dedication and discipline. This passion for detail makes it possible for consumers to enjoy consistent quality throughout the year.
For the past 30 years the winery has been led by Paolo Bisol, with strong support from his children Giustino and Isabella, the 5th generation of the family.
