Quinta da Calçada
Animating Minerality
Quinta da Calçada was built in 1917 at the center of the small city of Amarante, which sits in the Vinho Verde region by that same name. Its first vines were planted almost immediately afterward.
Even today, the estate remains in family ownership and the historic buildings also house the luxurious Relais&Châteaux Hotel and a fine dining restaurant "Largo do Paço." The Amarante region is shaped by precisely the type of soils necessary to produce fine Vinho Verde wines. Weathered granite with occasional deposits of slate, cooling influences from the nearby Atlantic: for the indigenous varieties that grow best here, these factors lend an animating minerality that has made them a darling the world over. The Reserva Portal da Calçada made believers out of us!
